Thursday Injury Report: Wright Still Out

Eric Wright, the Buccaneers’ starting right cornerback, did not practice for the second straight day on Thursday due to an Achilles injury and Head Coach Mike Schiano said after the workout that the team would gauge Wright’s progress on Friday before moving towards a decision as to whether he could play against Atlanta.   Complicating the issue is that Wright has recently started several games but been unable to finish them after aggravating the injury.

“The tough part is the limited resources,” said Schiano.  “You have 46 guys, and when one goes down that’s a tight squeeze.  So we’re going to have to make some decisions here Friday or Saturday.”

The Buccaneers’ injury report actually shrank by one player on Thursday, but that wasn’t good news.  WR Arrelious Benn was placed on injured reserve in the morning, which meant he no longer needed a status update for Sunday’s game.  Though he has been working through a shoulder problem of late, it was actually a recurrence of his training camp knee injury that led to the sudden move to I.R.

“The knee was a surprise to me,” said Schiano.  “He’s been struggling with [his shoulder], but the knee, he came in and said it’s really bothering him, they looked at it and that’s the decision.  I’m disappointed because he was helping in a lot of ways but on special teams he was really [valuable].  He had a really good performance in Carolina.”

The two most notable situations on Atlanta’s 13-man injury report are ankle issues for both WR Julio Jones and LB Sean Weatherspoon.  Jones’ injury is new, but he returned to practice on Thursday after sitting out Wednesday, though on a limited basis.  Weatherspoon has already missed three games with his injury and Falcons Head Coach Mike Smith expected him to get an increased workload on Thursday after returning in a limited fashion on Wednesday.  However, Weatherspoon apparently didn’t feel well (“illness” was added next to “ankle” on his line in the injury report) and was instead held out.
